Maken farmaceutische bedrijven excessieve winsten?

Dit artikel onderzoekt de literatuur en empirie over excessieve winsten van farmaceutische bedrijven. Wanneer is sprake van overwinst? Dit artikel bespreekt de verschillende maatstaven voor winstgevendheid en concludeert dat de meest gebruikte maatstaf – winst als percentage van de omzet – niet voldoet. Het rendement op eigen vermogen zou wel een geschikte maatstaf zijn, maar door de boekhoudkundige behandeling van R&D zijn goede cijfers over het rendement op eigen vermogen niet beschikbaar. Berekeningen voor een zestal bedrijven laten zien het gecorrigeerde rendement op eigen vermogen van farmaceutische bedrijven met 10% niet veel hoger is dan de kosten van kapitaal. De conclusie is dat het onzeker is of sprake is van overwinsten in de farmaceutische industrie.
