Ondergraaft inkomensongelijkheid solidariteit?

In deze bijdrage schatten we met een multilevel-model voor 21 Europese landen de impact van inkomensongelijkheid op solidariteit met buren of leden van de lokale gemeenschap, ouderen en zieken. Niet alleen de mate van inkomensongelijkheid is van belang, maar ook de structuur ervan heeft invloed op de bereidheid van Europeanen om het welzijn van landgenoten te verhogen. We vinden dat inkomensongelijkheid in de samenleving negatief is gerelateerd aan de mate van solidariteit en dat vooral het verschil tussen de hoogste inkomens en de middengroepen mensen minder solidair maakt. Dit effect is terug te vinden bij alle inkomensgroepen.
