Maatschappelijke kosten-batenanalyses (MKBA's) hebben de afgelopen tien jaar diverse slechte investeringsplannen tegengehouden. Daarbij heeft het CPB een cruciale rol gespeeld. De baten van de MKBA activiteiten van het CPB zijn dan ook aanzienlijk groter dan de kosten. Het CPB wordt echter door velen niet begrepen, deels door de technische aard van het werk en deels omdat het CPB transparantie niet altijd belangrijk lijkt te vinden. Het is de vraag of de rol van het CPB op de markt voor MKBA's optimaal is; dit verdient nader onderzoek.
